The orthography rules of the Azerbaijani language remain one of the most difficult points for students and applicants.
AzEdu.az reports that the analysis of exam results and written works in recent years shows that serious mechanical and phonetic errors are made in the spelling of many words due to the influence of pronunciation.
These errors often stem from the sharp differences between the pronunciation and spelling of a word.
Based on observations, the part where students have the most difficulty is the spelling of compound words and auxiliary words. For example, expressions such as "sağ ol" (thank you), "hər kəs" (everyone), and "heç bir" (no one), which are frequently used in daily life, are still written together in many cases. However, writing these expressions separately at all times is one of the stable rules of our language.
Another problem is related to the sequence of vowels and consonants in borrowed words. Especially words like "orijinal" (original), "abituriyent" (applicant), and "laboratoriya" (laboratory) are shortened during pronunciation, so they are also incorrectly reflected on paper. Students often tend to write "orginal" instead of "orijinal", and "labaratoriya" instead of "laboratoriya", which directly leads to a loss of points.
At the same time, cases of consonant displacement (metathesis) are widespread in some words. The word "kiprik" (eyelash) being written as "kirpik", and the word "məşhur" (famous) being written as "məhşur" are among the most common "trap" words that have been a topic of discussion for many years. Teachers state that to prevent such errors, attention should be paid to the root and etymology of the word.
The "n-m" alternation caused by the influence of labial consonants ("b" and "p") is also one of the factors that complicate the writing process. Although the letter "n" is written in words like "sünbül" (ear of corn), "zənbil" (basket), and "anbar" (warehouse), students tend to write them with "m" due to the influence of pronunciation. However, in exceptional words like "pambıq" (cotton), "kombayn" (combine harvester), and "lampa" (lamp), the letter "m" must be used.
The number of nouns following words indicating quantity also requires special attention. Nouns following the combinations "bir çox" (many) and "bir sıra" (a number of) must be in the plural (for example: "bir çox şagirdlər" - many students). Conversely, after indefinite quantity numerals like "beş-altı" (five or six), the noun should only be in the singular.
Finally, the subtle points in words like "tövsiyə" (recommendation) and "layihə" (project) should not be forgotten. The word "tövsiyə" is written with only one "y" consonant. In the word "layihə", the letter "i" coming after "y" is the official rule. The best way to avoid making mistakes in writing is to read a lot and consult the official orthography dictionary whenever in doubt.
