Little known, but in demand - Group I's

Sometimes, during specialty selection, applicants code specialties they have heard of but do not fully understand their content. As a result, after completing higher education, they face difficulties regarding which field they can work in with that specialty.

Considering such cases, AzEdu.az has prepared a series of research articles to help applicants make more successful specialty choices.

This article provides information about specialties within the mathematics-informatics (RK) subgroup of Group I, which some applicants have little information about.

Land Management and Real Estate Cadastre

This specialty is a very important and practical field related to land resource management, land plot measurement, boundary clarification, mapping, and state registration. Here, students learn about geodetic instruments (theodolite, GPS, drone technologies), cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), land law, the real estate market, urbanization, and urban planning principles. In the modern era, as this field has become digitalized, working with satellite imagery, 3D maps, and digital cadastral systems is considered one of the key skills. This specialty is one of the rare fields that combines technical (measurement, mapping), legal (documentation), and economic (property value) knowledge, and is directly related to construction, urban planning, and land reforms in the country.

Graduates can work in the State Service for Property Issues and its regional departments, the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture, local municipalities, land allocation and documentation departments, companies implementing construction and development projects such as PASHA Construction, Kristal Absheron, private firms providing geodetic and topographic services, as well as consulting companies involved in real estate valuation, and additionally, they have the opportunity to establish independent activities by providing individual geodetic services.

Military Composite Materials Engineering

This specialty deals with the production of high-strength, lightweight, special-condition resistant materials and is primarily focused on the defense industry. Students learn about composite materials (e.g., carbon fiber materials), armored protective coatings, high-temperature and pressure resistant materials, explosion-resistant structures, nanomaterials, and the mechanical properties of materials. This field is applied in both military technology (tanks, armored vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles) and civilian sectors (aviation, space technology, automotive industry). Those who choose this specialty should be prepared to work in laboratory, production, and research environments.

Graduates can work in factories within the system of the Ministry of Defense Industry, Azersilah and other military production enterprises, laboratories involved in the production and testing of special materials, relevant institutes of ANAS, as well as enterprises engaged in composite material production and industrial applications, and additionally, they have opportunities to find work abroad in the defense and aviation industries.

Military Communication Means Engineering

This specialty is related to the establishment of modern military communication systems, signal transmission, encryption, radio-electronic warfare, and information security. Students deeply learn about satellite communication, radio systems, network technologies, cryptography, and cybersecurity. In modern warfare, the failure of communication systems can lead to the cessation of all operations, making this specialty highly strategic. This field requires both technical and operational thinking skills.

Graduates can work as communication specialists in institutions such as the Ministry of Defense, State Security Service, Special State Protection Service, State Border Service, as well as in the civilian sector in Azercell, Bakcell, Nar, and other telecommunication and network companies.

Optotechnology Engineering

This specialty is a high-tech field related to light, optical systems, and laser technologies. Here, the development of optical devices (lenses, microscopes, telescopes), laser systems, fiber-optic communication, medical imaging devices (systems similar to X-ray, MRI technologies), and sensors is taught. This field is a combination of physics, electronics, and programming and is among the technologies of the future.

Graduates can work in ANAS institutes, resident companies of the High Technologies Park, medical equipment import and service companies, enterprises operating in the field of fiber-optic internet and communication, as well as on high-tech projects in innovation and startup environments.

Border Security and Management

This specialty covers the protection of state borders, migration control, combating smuggling, and the development of security strategies. Here, law, international relations, operational planning, risk analysis, and security management are taught. This field requires both physical security and analytical thinking.

Graduates can work in the State Border Service, State Migration Service, Ministry of Internal Affairs, State Security Service, and other security agencies, as well as in international projects and in the field of security analysis.

Melioration Engineering

This specialty is related to improving soil quality, establishing irrigation and drainage systems, and managing water resources. Here, students learn about hydraulic structures, reservoirs, canals, pumping systems, and soil recultivation. This specialty is very important for Azerbaijan's agriculture, as irrigation is a key factor in productivity.

Graduates can work in Azerbaijan Melioration and Water Management OJSC, the Ministry of Agriculture, agroparks, large farming enterprises, engineering companies implementing irrigation projects, as well as organizations working in the field of ecological and water resource management.

Operation Engineering of Ship Power Plants

This specialty is related to the management of ship engines and power systems, and students learn about diesel engines, power generation systems, fuel technologies, and maintenance. Working in this field often means operating in an international environment and is considered one of the high-income fields.

Graduates can work in Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company, Baku International Sea Trade Port, ship repair yards, offshore platforms (e.g., SOCAR projects), international shipping companies, and organizations operating in the field of marine engineering.

Instrument Engineering

This specialty covers the development and application of measurement, control, and automation devices used in industry, combining knowledge of electronics, programming, and mechanics. Since all modern factories are automated, this specialty is very practical and in demand.

Graduates have wide opportunities to work in SOCAR, BP, Azerenergy, industrial factories, production enterprises, engineering companies that build automation systems, as well as in the oil and gas, energy, and chemical industries.

The specialties presented above, although not the most recognized areas in the RK subgroup, are in fact directions with practical application in the labor market, directly related to state and strategic sectors, and requiring specialized personnel. For the vast majority of these specialties, graduates have the opportunity to work not only in the general job market but also specifically in large and stable institutions such as the Ministry of Defense, State Border Service, State Service for Property Issues, SOCAR, and Azerbaijan Melioration and Water Management OJSC.

The main distinguishing feature of these specialties is that competition for them is relatively low, but the required knowledge and skills are more specific, which creates conditions for becoming a specialized professional in the future. At the same time, many directions (e.g., optotechnology, instrument engineering, marine engineering) are also valid internationally, opening up opportunities for graduates to work abroad.

Overall, although these specialties may not be "popular," with the right choice and professional development, they are considered fields that promise stable employment, good income, and a clear career path.
