The US government is preparing to impose new restrictions on the length of stay in the country for foreign students and some other non-immigrant visa holders.
AzEdu.az, citing foreign media, reports that the duration of stay for individuals entering the country with F, J, and I category visas will now be determined by a fixed time frame.
According to the new rules, students and exchange program participants will only be able to stay in the US for the duration of their education or program. However, this period will not exceed 4 years.
Individuals who need additional time to complete their academic program will be able to request an extension of their stay from federal agencies.
The changes will be officially published in the coming days and will take effect 60 days after publication.
US Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin stated that the previous system allowed some individuals to stay in the country for a long time and led to cases of abuse.
According to the Secretary, the new rules aim to more effectively vet foreign nationals in the US and strengthen control over the immigration process.
