At Khazar University, in order to receive a diploma, students are required to have a general average score, as well as an average score (GPA) of their major subjects, not lower than 70.
These students are given the opportunity to receive a diploma after raising their average scores to 70.
It is interesting, would it be appropriate to apply this rule in all universities?
Speaking to AzEdu.az on the topic, education management specialist Goshgar Maharramov noted that 50 or 60 points should not be enough to graduate from university, it is not possible to be a professional with half knowledge:
“Graduating from university, in general, should not be easy. All educators also say this: the entrance gate of universities should be wide, and the exit gate should be narrow. That is, it should be easy to get into university, but it should not be possible to graduate from university easily.
Khazar University also set the passing score at 70 earlier for this reason. Having a passing score causes students to work more responsibly, study more, and take their lessons seriously. As a result, a culture of preparing for lessons, not failing subjects, and taking education seriously has been formed at the university.
If the passing score at the university is 50, it means that knowing half of the knowledge that the student should know is enough. But can a job be completed with half knowledge? Can one become a doctor with half knowledge? Is it possible to become an engineer or an architect with half knowledge?
Therefore, I think that having a passing score of 50 or 60 at the university is not a good thing, on the contrary, it is a sad situation. Because only a student who scores 70 and above can be considered to have sufficient information, knowledge, and literacy in that field to be able to properly complete and finish the work assigned to them in the future. Is it possible to be a professional with half knowledge, to have any profession? It is questionable.”
We should not strive to graduate students merely on time. The main issue is not that the student graduates in 4 years, but that they graduate by truly learning:
“This practice of Khazar University is a very important, advanced, and exemplary practice. Because a person must truly know their specialty well. For this, 70 points should be a very minimal limit. A result below 70 points should be considered unacceptable.
This approach can encourage students to take education more responsibly and improve their academic results. The student will work harder, study more. If necessary, they will fail a subject, retake that subject, and meet the requirement.
We should not strive to graduate students merely on time. The goal should not be that the student must graduate exactly 4 years after entering the university. If the student cannot pass a subject, they should retake that subject. The main issue is not that the student graduates on time, but that they graduate by truly learning.”
