Student absence limits in world countries - Terms and rules

Absence limits are applied in higher education institutions to ensure students' participation in classes and to maintain their academic progress. These limits vary by country and university, as well as by individual subjects.

So, how are absence limits determined for students in higher education institutions in world countries, and what rules are applied regarding class attendance?

AzEdu.az has conducted research on the topic.

France

No absence limit is applied in lecture classes. In practical and tutorial classes (TD), the unjustified absence limit is a maximum of 1 time. If a student misses class without justification for the second time, they are excluded from the subject.

Germany

In state universities, students are given twice the time allotted for completing the study program. For example, a student studying a 3-year bachelor's program can complete their education in a maximum of 6 years.

Students who exceed the absence limit may have to pay tuition fees or face the risk of expulsion from the university.

Turkey

Students are given the opportunity to complete their education within twice the time allotted for the study program. For example, a student studying a 4-year program must complete their education within a maximum of 8 years.

After the specified period ends, the student's right to continue their education in that program expires.

Finland

Students are given the opportunity to complete their education within 1.5-2 times the time allotted for the study program. In addition, the main focus is on the quality of education and the fulfillment of academic requirements.

In some cases, students who do not attend classes frequently and extend their education may be required to pay additional tuition fees.

China

In China, certain restrictions are applied to extend the duration of bachelor's programs. For example, a 3-year program can be extended up to 5 years.

When the specified period ends, the student's registration may be canceled.

Japan

In Japan, bachelor's students may be given the opportunity to complete their education within twice the standard duration of the program.

Universities regularly monitor students' academic progress.

Students who cannot complete their education within the specified period may face the risk of expulsion.

United States of America

In the USA, there is no single study period and absence limit for all universities.

Universities set certain requirements based on students' academic performance and earned credits.

Students with unsatisfactory academic results may be placed on academic probation, and if the situation does not change, their enrollment in the program may be suspended.

United Kingdom

Typically, for bachelor's programs, it is possible to be absent for 2 years more than the study period.

Students who are absent for more than the study period may face additional fees or the risk of expulsion.
