Every year in Azerbaijan, we encounter more students from regional schools in the list of applicants who show high results in university entrance exams.
This raises a question in society: While the best tutors and preparatory courses, as well as better educational conditions, are available in the capital, why do mainly regional schoolchildren achieve high results?
Gunay Alakbarova, a member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Science and Education, spoke to AzEdu.az on the topic.
She noted that in many regional students who show high results, we see a very strong goal and motivation:
"It would not be correct to explain the issue here only by the number of tutors and preparatory courses. In recent years, the results of the work carried out to improve the quality of education in the regions are already reflected in the admission indicators. The improvement of the material and technical capabilities of schools, more attention paid to the professional development of teachers, the certification process, various projects and trainings, as well as access to digital education resources have significantly reduced the difference between the region and the capital compared to previous years.
On the other hand, we see a very strong goal and motivation in many regional students who show high results. They perceive admission to university not just as the next level of education, but as a great opportunity for their future. The school, teacher, and parents often work together around this goal. I think this unity is a very important factor.
Let's not forget one point: a good result does not necessarily mean an expensive course or a famous tutor. A strong teacher, systematic school education, correct guidance, and the student's personal effort sometimes yield greater results.
The increasing number of students from the regions who score high is a gratifying indicator for me. This can be evaluated as a result of both the efforts of the teachers working in those schools and the work done to make educational opportunities more accessible across the country. The main goal should be this: regardless of where the student lives, they should have equal opportunities to receive quality education and achieve success."
