In the depths of the ocean, scientists have discovered more than a thousand new species of marine life previously unknown to science in the last year.
AzEdu.az reports that the research is being conducted within the framework of an international initiative aimed at studying and describing new species of marine fauna.
According to scientists' estimates, up to two million undiscovered species may exist in the oceans. The project is supported by the Nippon and Nekton foundations.
One of the most interesting findings was a deep-sea predator called a “ghost shark” with a translucent p and glowing eyes. Researchers also unofficially named a carnivorous sponge that hunts small crustaceans with sticky hooks the “ball of death.”
