As is known, very little time is left for specialty selection. These days, parents and applicants are searching for both universities and specialties. However, in many cases, we witness that parents make decisions about specialty selection without being fully aware of the labor market.
Some want to choose the specialty they have dreamed of for their child for years, but they do not consider whether their child can study in that specialty or whether it is to their liking. Or they take steps based on many misconceptions they believe to be true.
AzEdu.az was told about the topic by science and education expert Sabuh Abdullayev.
He noted that some students in universities do not study their lessons at all:
“Exams are already concluding, and the specialty selection stage awaits us. This period is one of the most sensitive stages for both applicants and parents. Here, regardless of whether a low or high score is accumulated, everyone experiences excitement. Because everyone wishes to be admitted to their desired specialty for free or to study at a good university.
At the same time, one of the issues that concerns them is whether they will be able to find a job in the future in the specialty they choose, and whether studying at that university will be comfortable for them or create difficulties. Many questions are addressed to us regarding this.
At this stage, it is especially necessary to be careful. Sometimes we encounter such advertisements and misleading information as “we guarantee 100 percent that you will be admitted to this specialty,” “you will get into such and such a university,” and so on. First of all, one should not be deceived by such promises. It is absolutely necessary to conduct research. At the same time, it is recommended to consult with experts who have experience in this field.
As a specialist, I regularly observe that some students in universities show no interest in their lessons at all. When asked the reason, they say: “We don't want to study this specialty. We had no information about this specialty beforehand, we didn't know it was like this.” That's why they become uninterested, and sometimes they drop out of their studies and either go abroad or prepare for admission exams again.
Therefore, it is unequivocally necessary to ensure that parents advise their children and express their recommendations not unilaterally, but by consulting with them. When I conduct specialty selection, I absolutely ascertain the opinions of students and applicants, and I take into account their character and psychological state to determine which university would be more comfortable for them to study at, and at the same time, which would be more favorable for them to join the labor market and find a job in the future.”
