One day hot, one day cold: How to protect children from illness? - PEDIATRICIAN

In recent days, the changeable weather conditions, one day hot, the next day cold or rainy, are causing the spread of microbes and infectious diseases among children?

At the same time, such weather conditions also put parents in a difficult situation. They hesitate to decide how to dress their children.

Pediatrician Shalala Polukhova, speaking to AzEdu.az on the topic, stated that the main rule in children's clothing is to dress them in several thin layers instead of one thick garment:

“Since children's immune systems are not yet fully formed, they cannot adequately fight against viruses and bacteria. Children's respiratory tracts are more sensitive compared to adults. During sharp changes in temperature and humidity, the p cannot quickly adapt to new conditions. This leads to a decrease in p resistance and creates conditions for the spread of various viruses.

In such weather, parents ask, “How should we dress the child so that they are neither cold nor sweaty?” Yes, this is somewhat difficult, and we doctors also frequently encounter this question.

The most correct method is to choose several layers of clothing instead of one thick garment. For example, since the weather is cool in the morning, a child can wear a thin shirt and then a jacket or a light coat when going to school. In the afternoon, when the weather warms up, it is easy to remove the extra layers. This helps the child move comfortably and prevents sweating.”

The main reason for the increase in viral infections in cold weather is that children spend more time indoors:

“That is, choosing clothes that are suitable for the weather and can be easily put on and taken off is the most appropriate approach. In the evening, when the weather gets cold, the child can wear the same outerwear again. In general, the principle “There is no bad weather, there is suitable clothing” is fundamental here.

For example, in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, in windy weather, a child can be protected with a protective hat, and in colder periods, with a thin scarf or a jacket that covers the neck. In rainy weather, it is advisable to wear waterproof but breathable shoes.”

Changes in weather are not a direct cause of illness. The main cause is viruses, but changeable weather conditions can affect their spread:

“At low temperatures, some viruses can remain active for a longer period. This can increase the risk of infection.”

To reduce the risk of infection, the pediatrician considers the following measures important:

“It is important to instill in children the habit of regular hand washing, to frequently ventilate enclosed spaces, to consult a doctor when symptoms such as cough, sore throat, and runny nose appear, and not to self-medicate. It is also necessary to get seasonal, especially flu vaccinations on time, and to pay attention to the child's sleep regimen and balanced nutrition.

By following these rules, it is possible to protect children from both cold and viruses,” the pediatrician added.
