For decades, this region has been associated with the mysterious disappearance of numerous ships and planes. For many years, people have tried to link the events occurring here with supernatural forces, aliens, time warps, and even lost civilizations. However, scientific research shows that the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle is more related to human errors, natural conditions, and the exaggeration of events over the years.

The concept of the Bermuda Triangle emerged in the mid-20th century. Although the first writings about the mysterious losses claimed to have occurred in this region were published in the 1950s, the main person who popularized the phrase “Bermuda Triangle” was the American writer and journalist Vincent Gaddis. In his article “The Deadly Bermuda Triangle,” published in Argosy magazine in 1964, he brought together various ship and plane losses and presented this region as a special place of mystery.
In the 1970s, books written about the Bermuda Triangle led to the worldwide popularization of this topic. In particular, writer Charles Berlitz's book “The Bermuda Triangle: An Incredible Saga of Unexplained Disappearances,” published in 1974, attracted the attention of millions of people. Berlitz investigated various missing incidents and presented some of them as unexplained events. Although his book achieved great commercial success, in later years some historians and researchers claimed that he exaggerated some information and did not fully present some facts when selecting incidents.
One of the interesting aspects of the Bermuda Triangle is that its exact boundaries have never been defined. Some sources show this area as a triangle extending from the coasts of Florida to the Bermuda Islands and Puerto Rico. Other sources describe the area more broadly. As a result of this ambiguity, many ordinary accidents and missing incidents in the Atlantic Ocean have been associated with the Bermuda Triangle over time.
One of the most famous and terrifying incidents related to this region is the Flight 19 incident, which occurred on December 5, 1945. On that day, five TBM Avenger bomber aircraft belonging to the US Navy took off from Fort Lauderdale base in Florida for a training flight. The planes were supposed to return after completing a specific mission over the Atlantic. However, during the flight, Lieutenant Charles Taylor, the group leader, began to lose his bearings.
In radio conversations, the pilots were heard to be confused. They stated that they did not know exactly where they were and thought that the compasses were not working correctly. After a while, contact with the planes was completely lost. Search operations began immediately, but no trace of the five planes was found. What made the incident even more mysterious was the disappearance of a large PBM Mariner seaplane sent for the search.
Thus, the loss of six military aircraft in one day played a key role in the creation of the Bermuda Triangle legend.
However, subsequent scientific research brought a different perspective to the Flight 19 incident. American researcher, pilot, and writer Lawrence David Kusche thoroughly investigated this incident and showed that there was no extraordinary evidence here. He examined military documents, weather data, and witness statements and concluded that the main causes of the incident could be navigational error, weather conditions, human factor, and fuel shortage.
Kusche showed in his research that a part of the popular stories about the Bermuda Triangle was presented in a more dramatic form years after the events. Some writers added extra elements of mystery to the events, making them appear more terrifying. For example, some sources changed the pilots' last words, presenting them in a more alarming way and portraying the incident as if it defied the laws of nature.
Most modern scientists believe that there is no need for extraordinary theories to explain the events occurring in the Bermuda Triangle. Research in the fields of oceanography and meteorology shows that this region is one of the naturally difficult areas. There are strong ocean currents, sudden weather changes, tropical storms, and very deep ocean areas.
In particular, the warm ocean current called the Gulf Stream plays a major role in this region. This strong current can rapidly carry ship wreckage and debris over long distances. Therefore, it sometimes seems unusual that no trace is found after an accident, but this can be explained by the natural characteristics of the ocean.
The depth of the ocean in the Bermuda region is also a major problem. In some parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the depth reaches several thousand meters. It is very difficult to find the remains of ships and planes that sink in such deep waters. Even with modern technologies, it is not possible to detect all objects at the bottom of the ocean. For this reason, some missing incidents remain a mystery for years.
The weather conditions in the region are also one of the dangerous factors. In this area where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, the weather can change very quickly. However, scientific research shows that there is no evidence to prove that compasses are unusually disrupted in the region. Simply put, there are various changes in the Earth's magnetic field, and inexperienced navigators may misinterpret these differences.
One of the most mysterious theories about the Bermuda Triangle is the claim that Atlantis is located in this area. Some people believe that the remains of an ancient lost civilization are here and that unknown energies affect ships and planes. Other theories talk about alien intervention, time tunnels, and transitions to parallel worlds. However, none of these claims have been confirmed by scientific evidence.
Nevertheless, some incidents related to the Bermuda Triangle are truly astonishing. For example, in 1918, a large cargo ship named USS Cyclops, belonging to the US Navy, disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean with more than 300 people. No significant trace of the ship was found. This incident remains one of the greatest mysteries in US naval history.
Some researchers also note that both proponents and skeptics sometimes take a selective approach to the Bermuda Triangle. That is, just as one side tries to portray all events as mysterious, the other side, while trying to explain everything simply, may overlook some ambiguous points. The main principle of the scientific approach is to rely on evidence in both cases.
In conclusion, it can be said that the Bermuda Triangle is not entirely fictional, as ship and plane losses have indeed occurred in this region. However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that supernatural forces are behind these events. The biggest mystery is perhaps not the Bermuda Triangle itself, but the stories that humans create in the face of unknown events.
What makes the Bermuda Triangle terrifying is not aliens or mystical forces. The truly terrifying aspects are the dark ocean thousands of meters deep, weather conditions that can change in seconds, human errors, and the sheer power of nature. Sometimes the real world itself can be more mysterious and more terrifying than fabricated legends.
