Why do most people use their right hand?

Scientists at Oxford University have investigated why the vast majority of people use their right hand more.

AzEdu.az reports, citing foreign media, that according to the results of a new study, the prevalence of right-handedness may be related to the development of the human brain and the fact that people began to walk on two legs.

The study noted that approximately 90 percent of people in the world predominantly use their right hand. Many systems, from school desks to everyday tools, are also designed to accommodate this majority.

Scientists have stated that while hand preference is more balanced in other primate species, humans typically favor one hand. According to researchers, the fact that humans began to walk upright and developed larger brains influenced the widespread prevalence of right-handedness.

During the research, it was also determined that hand preference forms at a very early stage in human life. Experts state that hand dominance begins in the womb and develops until adolescence.

The study emphasized that environmental factors also play an important role. It was noted that especially during childhood, using one hand more can create differences in bone structure and muscle strength.

Scientists also revealed that using the non-dominant hand helps create new neural connections in the brain. This process, called "neuroplasticity," facilitates the strengthening of parts of the brain related to movement and coordination.

Experts believe that while right-handedness has biological bases, environmental factors also significantly influence people's hand preference. It is reported that left-handed people are still trying to adapt to daily life, which is mainly designed for right-handed people.
