Scientists: It is still not fully known why people cry

Although scientists can explain how tears are formed and what function they perform, it is still not fully understood why people cry for emotional reasons.

AzEdu.az reports, citing foreign media, that Dr. Marie Bannier-Helaou, a researcher at the Institute of Human Biology in Switzerland, stated that tears consist of mucus, electrolytes, water, proteins, and lipids. Proteins have antiviral and antibacterial properties, while electrolytes are essential for the normal functioning of the p.

According to experts, there are three types of tears: basal, reflex, and emotional. Basal tears ensure that the eye remains constantly moist. Reflex tears are produced when dust or other foreign objects enter the eye, protecting it.

Emotional tears, on the other hand, are formed as a result of complex neural mechanisms connected to the brain's centers that control emotions.

According to Ad Vingerhoets, an honorary professor at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, crying usually reflects not a single emotion, but a strong emotional overload. He noted that as people age, crying is more associated with empathy, and people can shed tears not only for their own pain but also for what others experience.

Research by Lauren Bilsma, a clinical psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA, shows that during crying, the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which controls the "fight or flight" reaction, first increases, and then the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the p, kicks in. However, experts emphasize that crying does not always make a person feel better. This depends on the person's psychological state and the reactions of those around them.

Studies also show that emotional tears can act as a social signal, strengthening people's desire to provide support and help.

According to experts, men cry on average 0-1 times a month, while women cry 4-5 times a month. Scientists believe that this difference may be related to hormonal, neurological, and personality characteristics. People with high levels of empathy and emotional individuals tend to cry more.

Scientists believe that tears are not only a physiological but also a means of social communication, helping to convey a person's strong emotional state to those around them.
