Leading universities in the world are recognized and gain prestige globally through their academic achievements, innovative approaches, international collaborations, and graduate successes. In Azerbaijan, increasing the international competitiveness of higher education institutions and strengthening their positions in the global academic space are also pressing issues.
Which of our universities may have branding successes in the future? Which university has the power to introduce its brand to the world?
Speaking to AzEdu.az on the topic, Elnara Akimova, a member of the Science and Education Committee of the Milli Majlis and a deputy, noted that world university experience shows that international student flow, the impact of scientific research, foreign partnerships, an innovation environment, and specialization serving the country's strategic interests are crucial for becoming a global brand:

"In Azerbaijan, based on these criteria, several universities stand out that could become more strongly recognized internationally in the future. First and foremost, ADA University attracts attention. Its internationally oriented education model, foreign faculty, English-speaking environment, and ability to attract students from various countries around the world increase ADA's potential to become a global, not just regional, academic brand. The university is already recognized as one of the most prominent higher education institutions in the South Caucasus.
Baku State University, on the other hand, has a completely different advantage. As Azerbaijan's oldest and largest scientific institution, BSU is a symbol of the country's academic history. Having educated thousands of scientists, academics, statesmen, and intellectuals for over a century, the university is the main bearer of Azerbaijan's scientific heritage. Many universities worldwide have formed global brands precisely on their historical prestige and scientific schools. In this regard, BSU can also become one of the region's influential scientific centers through more active promotion and scientific integration in the international academic space."
Many universities worldwide have become global brands by specializing in a particular field:
"Baku Higher Oil School, in recent years, has attracted attention with its academic results, international collaborations, and a training model focused on technical specialties. It has the potential to gain international prestige, especially in the fields of energy and technology.
At the same time, Azerbaijan Technical University and Azerbaijan Medical University can also become specialized regional centers in their respective fields. As technology, engineering, and medicine are among the most in-demand fields of the future, the development prospects for these universities are quite broad.
Today, ADA University and Baku State University appear to have the highest probability of becoming world brands for Azerbaijan. ADA stands out with its internationalization and modern management model, while BSU is distinguished by its rich history, scientific traditions, and the human capital it has nurtured. If the country's higher education strategy is consistently pursued, these universities can shape Azerbaijan's global academic image in the future."
Education expert Elchin Suleymanov stated that significant work is being done in Azerbaijan to increase international competitiveness in higher education:

"A state program is being implemented in this regard. This includes both dual degree programs and initiatives that create conditions for individuals who have completed doctoral studies abroad to return to Azerbaijan and engage in scientific and pedagogical activities in higher education institutions. The main goal of these programs is to strengthen the position of Azerbaijani universities in international rankings. The results achieved in recent years confirm this. Azerbaijani universities are increasingly solidifying their positions in QS, Times Higher Education, and Shanghai rankings.
This is a gratifying situation. There are several main reasons for this. One is the increase in the number of scientific research, another is the growing number of foreign students studying at universities, the strengthening of the material and technical base, the implementation of international projects, and the expansion of dual state programs. At the same time, there is an increase in the number of foreign students wishing to pursue higher education in Azerbaijan. Within the framework of the "Study in Azerbaijan" program, the Azerbaijani state provides citizens of various countries with the opportunity to study in our country. All of these positively impact our universities achieving higher results in international rankings.
I believe that in the near future, several Azerbaijani universities will join the ranks of leading higher education institutions in the region. Here, first and foremost, ADA University, Baku Higher Oil School, Azerbaijan State University of Economics, Khazar University, Azerbaijan Technical University, Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, as well as the recently established Karabakh University, can be mentioned. Baku State University, one of the country's oldest higher education institutions, can also be added to this list. Furthermore, Baku Engineering University is also among the promising higher education institutions. I believe that the universities I have listed will be among the most sought-after by foreign students and capable of competing internationally in the future."
