Certification exams: it WILL be risky for these subject teachers

The results of chemistry and biology teachers in the teacher certification exam held last year were not as successful as expected. This year, teachers of fine arts, technology, physical education, music and history will participate in the exam.

It is interesting, in which area will most teachers not be able to pass the exam successfully?

Elmin Yaqubbəyli, executive director of Hədəf Lyceum, told AzEdu.az that last year's results of teacher certification exams showed that expectations for some subjects were not met:

181733

"In particular, the results of chemistry and biology teachers were weaker compared to other areas, and this caused serious discussions in the educational community. According to official statistics, approximately 83% of biology teachers and 85% of chemistry teachers were successful.

This means that 15-17% of teachers in both subjects failed the exam. Although the results in physics were relatively good (approximately 88% success), in the overall picture, only 68% of teachers in all subjects passed the certification. That is, approximately one out of every three teachers showed unsuccessful results.

These figures reveal an important point: weak results are related not so much to a specific subject as to the suitability of that subject to the exam format. Analyzes show that results are lower in subjects that require analytical thinking and application skills, and at the same time have a heavy theoretical basis. This year, fine arts, technology, physical education, music and history teachers will participate in the certification exams. The message from past statistics is clear: teachers of practically oriented subjects can have more difficulties in test-type, theoretically based exams."

"In this regard, technology and physical education subjects are considered more risky areas," our interlocutor added:

"Because in these subjects, teaching is mainly based on practical skills, while the exam measures theoretical knowledge. Teachers of fine arts and music are considered to be in the medium risk group. Here, both practical and theoretical components exist. History, on the other hand, is traditionally considered more suitable for the test format because it is based on theory and memory, and results in this area are expected to be relatively stable.

In conclusion, last year's statistics provide a basis for drawing such a general conclusion: the weakest results in the exam are usually recorded in practically oriented subjects, but evaluated with a theoretical test. If this trend continues, the teachers who may have the most difficulty this year may be those working in the fields of technology and physical education. However, the final results will be formed depending on the individual preparation level of the teachers and the content of the exam."
