The Danish government plans to implement strict restrictions on the use of mobile phones in schools and after-school clubs starting from the 2026/2027 academic year.
AzEdu.az reports, citing foreign media, that according to the new decision, students will not be able to use personal mobile phones and other internet-enabled devices during lessons.
The main purpose of this step is to increase students' focus on the learning process, prevent social media addiction, and foster healthier social relationships in the educational environment.
The Ministry of Education believes that continuous use of mobile devices both distracts students and weakens their social communication skills. The government states that strengthening emotional and social connections among students, especially in primary and lower grades, is considered a priority.
According to the new rules, schools will develop their own internal mobile phone policies, and these rules will define specific guidelines for the storage and use of devices during teaching hours. In some schools, phones will be collected in special boxes before lessons begin, while in others, their use will only be permitted during specific breaks.
The Minister of Education emphasized that the decision was prepared based on the feedback from teachers and parents, and its aim is not to punish children, but rather to teach them to focus their attention and strengthen their behavioral skills in a social environment.
This initiative is part of the growing “phone ban wave” in Europe. Similar decisions have also been adopted in France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland in recent years. Experts believe that while such restrictions may cause some short-term inconveniences, in the long run, they will lead to an improvement in educational quality and students' psychological well-being.
