The United States of America is considered the undisputed center of global medical education and biomedical innovation. Unlike many other countries, medical education in the US does not begin directly after high school; students must first complete a 4-year bachelor's degree (Pre-Med – medical preparatory program) in biology, chemistry, or a similar field, and score highly on the extremely difficult MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). This stage is designed to measure not only students' academic knowledge but also their analytical thinking and scientific approach skills. This is followed by a 4-year medical school and then a residency stage, which lasts 3–7 years depending on the specialization.
