Graduated, but unemployed: “Employers look at skills, not education”

In modern times, demands have changed. Employers now prefer candidates who possess not only a diploma, but also various competencies, skills, and real experience.

These words were told to AzEdu.az by science and education expert Sabuh Abdullayev.

He noted that students should not only accumulate knowledge, but also learn to analyze and apply this knowledge:

“One of the issues related to students in higher education institutions is their approach formed during their school years. In secondary school, students mainly focus on exams, preferring to work on more tests to get high scores in graduation and entrance exams. The goal is to be admitted to the higher education institution and specialty they desire. This approach is formed by the wishes of both parents and students.

However, after being admitted to higher education institutions, students must now work on different skills. At this stage, critical thinking, creativity, and pedagogical approaches should come to the fore. Students should not only accumulate knowledge, but also learn to analyze and apply this knowledge.

Nevertheless, sometimes deviations from this development process are observed. This is due to both general processes in society and the influence of social networks. As differences arise between the lifestyle presented on social networks and real life, students' attention and motivation can also be negatively affected.”

The expert stated that it is quite difficult for individuals who spend their time inefficiently and are content with only obtaining a formal diploma to find a place in the labor market:

“Also, there are students who correctly evaluate the environment and assess it through a kind of “prism of reality.” Such young people try to increase their competencies by thinking about their future. They develop independently, strengthen their language skills, and acquire additional knowledge and skills relevant to their specialties. At the same time, they earn various certificates and diplomas, and try to gain practical experience by joining volunteer projects. This allows them to already have some experience when starting work in the future and to be more prepared for the real work environment.

Young people formed in such an environment face fewer difficulties in terms of building a career and finding a job in the future. On the other hand, it is quite difficult for individuals who spend this time inefficiently and are content with only obtaining a formal diploma to find a place in the labor market."
