In this country, hundreds of schools have been left without teachers

The education system in Portugal is currently facing serious structural problems.

AzEdu.az, citing foreign media, reports that approximately 480 school groups across the country are experiencing a teacher shortage. Twelve of these groups are in such a situation that at least 10 teaching hours remain vacant, meaning teachers cannot be appointed for those subjects.

This situation is particularly acute around the capital Lisbon and in the central regions. Education experts warn that the ongoing shortage negatively impacts the quality of students' education and makes it impossible to fully implement curricula in some schools.

Fernando Alexandre, Minister of Education and Scientific Innovation, stated in his remarks on the matter that the government is closely monitoring the situation and preparing a new action plan for the systematic resolution of the problems. The Minister emphasized that a 6% increase in funds allocated to education, higher education, and scientific research is planned in the state budget for 2026.

According to him, this increase will not be limited solely to salary indexation; it will also be used for attracting new teachers, renovating school infrastructure, and financing scientific projects in higher education institutions.
