How many graduates work at their alma mater? - SURVEY

The formation of the faculty staff in higher education institutions is one of the main factors directly affecting the quality of the academic environment. In this context, the percentage of faculty members who are graduates of the university or academy where they work serves as an important indicator. Such an indicator is significant in terms of institutional continuity, preservation of academic traditions, and the development of internal human resource potential.

What percentage of the faculty staff working in higher education institutions are graduates of the university or academy where they work?

Regarding the topic, the AzEdu.az Education Portal sent an inquiry to universities.

In response to our inquiry, the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) stated that the number of our graduates among those working at the university constitutes the majority.

“Today, they demonstrate successful results in both teaching and research. As a university, we always prioritize our graduates. This is because they have received their education at a higher education institution with an engineering profile. In other words, their specialization is suitable, and the university is more familiar to them.”

According to the information we obtained from Azerbaijan University (AU), approximately 15 percent of Azerbaijan University's faculty staff are university graduates:

“The fact that a certain part of the faculty staff consists of the university's own graduates is a positive factor in terms of continuity and the preservation of institutional memory within the academic environment. The university's values, corporate culture, and standards are preserved and strengthened more easily and systematically. On the other hand, university graduates adapt quickly to the environment and work because they are well-versed in internal procedures.

At the same time, the fact that this indicator remains limited relative to the total share, at approximately 15 percent, indicates that the principle of open competition is maintained in human resource policy, and specialists educated at various local and foreign universities are attracted to the university. This approach allows for the balanced preservation of intellectual diversity and quality competition in the academic environment."

It has been reported by Lankaran State University (LSU) that 39 percent of the faculty staff working at LSU are graduates of the university:

“This indicator not only ensures the continuity of academic traditions formed within the higher education institution but also positively impacts the work environment.”

It has been noted by Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU) that the majority of the faculty staff at Azerbaijan Medical University are graduates of our university:

“Historically, since the training of medical personnel has been primarily carried out by AMU, most of the staff working in profile departments are our graduates. At the same time, teachers instructing in Social Sciences, Biology, and Physics-Mathematics are graduates of other universities. In recent years, specialists educated in Turkey and other foreign countries also work at our university.

The continuous professional development and enhancement of the professional level of the faculty staff in the departments positively impact the quality of our academic environment and increase the competitiveness of our university.”

It has been reported by Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) that 44% of the faculty staff are graduates of this university:

“This indicator, of course, positively affects the quality and competitiveness of the academic environment. Firstly, graduates possess institutional memory. They deeply understand the university's teaching philosophy and academic tradition. Furthermore, this trend can contribute to the deepening of knowledge and experiences, as well as research directions, formed over many years.

According to the information we received from Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University (ASPU),  49.2% of those working at the university are graduates of ASPU.

It has been reported by Baku Eurasian University (BAEU) that the total academic staff of the university currently numbers 198 people:

“Of these, 18 are our own graduates. This, in turn, constitutes 10%.”
