As an English teacher, there is a truth I have observed in the classroom for years: a child's success is not solely shaped by the knowledge acquired at school. The greatest support often begins at home. A parent's interest, attitude, and provision of motivation directly influence the student's English language learning pace.
These observations are not just my opinion. The OECD's “Education at a Glance” report emphasizes that students who receive family support achieve academic results that are, on average, 30% higher. I have seen this repeatedly in my classroom: children who receive support at home complete assignments more responsibly, do not hesitate to express themselves, and progress more quickly.
A 2023 study by Cambridge University Press also revealed an interesting finding: if a parent shows interest in their child's English language learning at least twice a week, the student's vocabulary increases by 22%, and their listening comprehension skills improve by 18%. I have repeatedly seen that even just 5 minutes of looking at flashcards at home changes a child's self-confidence in class.
Sometimes parents tell me: “I don't know English, how can I help?” In fact, UNESCO's 2024 report indicates that language proficiency is not important; what matters is interest and support. Simply looking at the child's textbooks, asking about assignments, or listening to a short video together is sufficient.
Technology also plays a significant role here. According to British Council research, students who engage in just 10–15 minutes of interactive practice daily can improve their speaking and listening skills by up to 40%. I also recommend that my students practice a little, but consistently, every day, and the results are evident.
As a teacher, I believe that the strongest educational model is “teacher + parent” collaboration. If we provide knowledge at school, parents reinforce that knowledge at home. When these two forces work together, a child's language skills develop in a healthier, faster, and more self-confident manner.
