There is no specialty that is completely insignificant or unnecessary. My personal opinion is that there are no specialties that should be abolished. There are simply specialties that develop in line with the demands of the labor market or fail to meet these demands.
These views were expressed to AzEdu.az by education expert Ramin Nurəliyev.
The expert noted that a specialist who deeply understands every specialty and possesses excellent knowledge and skills in that field will find a place for themselves in the labor market:
“Every specialty has a certain level of demand. However, the main issue is the level of this demand. The demand for some specialties may decrease or increase in accordance with market economy and the requirements of the era. The main issue here is not the abolition of a specialty, but the fluctuation of activity in the labor market for that specialty. In my opinion, no specialty is completely unnecessary.
If any specialty has been established in global practice, this occurred because there was a real demand for that field during a certain period. In other words, there is no specialty that is completely insignificant or unnecessary. My personal opinion is that there are no specialties that should be abolished. There are simply specialties that develop in line with the demands of the labor market or fail to meet these demands.
A specialist who deeply understands every specialty and possesses excellent knowledge and skills in that field will find a place for themselves in the labor market. For example, even in specialties with the lowest demand, an individual who perfectly knows that field will hold a certain position in the labor market".
Currently, the development of specialties in line with the demands of the era is mainly based on computer-oriented fields:
“However, it is possible that in 5-10 years, due to an oversupply in these fields, the demand for those specialties may decrease. This is also a natural process. Currently, many young people are inclined towards IT-oriented specialties, and while this increases demand in the short term, it may lead to certain redundancies in this field in the future.
Therefore, young people must definitely consider the demands of the era when choosing a specialty. For example, there was a period when economics and accounting were considered prestigious specialties. However, certain redundancies are now observed in these fields. This is because tax and accounting work is already being automated through artificial intelligence and various software. As a result, the labor of some accountants working in this field is no longer needed as much as before.
This does not mean that accountants will not be needed at all. On the contrary, there will always be a demand for professional accountants who perfectly know their job. Simply put, poorly trained specialists will gradually be pushed out of the labor market".
The main issue is not the chosen specialty, but the high level of professionalism within that specialty:
“Thus, while the development of artificial intelligence and computer-oriented specialties may reduce the role of some fields in the labor market, it will not completely abolish them. Simply, the demand for some specialties will decrease. However, individuals who deeply understand every field and are excellent in their profession will maintain their positions in the labor market.
I want to reiterate that there is no specialty without demand. However, it is important what level that demand is, in accordance with the requirements of the era. Today in Azerbaijan, specialties with the lowest passing scores – forestry, agriculture, veterinary medicine – naturally have demand, but not sufficiently. A veterinarian who knows their job well lives better than even a lawyer.
The main thing is that whatever specialty we choose, we must become a specialist in it. And when choosing a specialty, we must think in accordance with the demands of the era".
