A giant glacier in Antarctica is melting at a record speed

In Antarctica, the glacier named Hektoria is melting at a record speed, and its area has decreased by almost 50% in just two months.

AzEdu.az reports that this was shown in a new study published in the journal "Nature Geoscience".

The fastest melting recorded in modern history could lead to serious consequences for sea levels.

The glacier, which is the size of the Philadelphia area, usually shrank by more than several hundred meters per year previously. However, from November to December 2022, Hektoria decreased by 5 miles (approximately 8 km – ed.).

The authors of the study noted that if large glaciers melt at this rate, sea levels will rise sharply. This is because Antarctica has enough ice to raise global sea levels by approximately 190 feet (almost 58 meters – ed.).
