“Even the weakest student could get 14 correct” - RESPONSE to those protesting about mathematics

After the graduation exam held on March 9, a large number of applicants voiced their protests, stating that the mathematics questions were difficult, they could not achieve good results, and that the question conditions were long and the topics complex.

It is interesting, were the questions really difficult? To what extent can this dissatisfaction of the applicants be considered justified?

It should be noted that although it was claimed that the questions were difficult, no incorrect questions were found.

Mathematics teacher Nərgiz Şahmurova, commenting on the topic to AzEdu.az, noted that a large part of the 17 closed and open-ended questions in the exam were quite simple:

"Claims have spread regarding the mathematics questions being very difficult in the graduation exam held on March 9. As a teacher, I evaluate these claims as follows: a large part of the 17 closed and open-ended questions in the exam were quite simple. However, among the questions requiring detailed answers, there were essentially 2 good and thought-provoking questions. The remaining questions can generally be assessed as being of an average difficulty level.

There is also a point that teachers want to draw attention to here. Why are difficult and medium-level questions included among those requiring detailed answers? Because questions requiring detailed answers yield higher scores, while closed-ended questions are evaluated with fewer points. In my opinion, if medium and difficult level questions were placed among the closed-ended questions, and questions requiring detailed answers were simpler, it would be more comfortable and advantageous for students.

Overall, I can say that one question, in particular, is being discussed among the questions - the question related to parabolas. According to research, this question was taken from Russian Olympiad-type materials. Nevertheless, I believe that question was not that difficult either. Compared to parabola or function questions that have appeared in graduation exams in recent years, it was approximately at the same level.

I should also note that even the weakest student I taught was able to answer 14 questions correctly in this exam. In other words, it was an exam where even a very weak student could answer 13-14 questions."
